Lori Verstegen Ryan, Ph.D.
Director, Corporate Governance Institute
Lori Verstegen Ryan, Ph.D., is a professor of Management, specializing in corporate governance and business ethics. She is the Director of SDSU’s Corporate Governance Institute, a research and education center dedicated to the study and application of responsible corporate governance principles worldwide. In that capacity, she co-hosted two recent events with Relational Investors co-founder David Batchelder: “The Home Depot Turnaround: The Inside Story” with Home Depot CEO Frank Blake in February 2015, and “Shareholder Interventions of the Year,” featuring the Chairmen of the Boards of Hewlett-Packard, CVS Caremark, and Chesapeake Energy, in January 2014. She also co-hosted the scholarly “Responsible Corporate Governance Practices Worldwide” symposium with Brock University in Niagara Falls, Ontario, in May 2013, and hosted the “21st Century Corporate Governance: Scholarship Meets Practice” symposium and public panel at SDSU in April 2011.
Ryan is Past-President and Fellow of the International Association for Business and Society and has served on the Executive Committee of the Academy of Management’s Social Issues in Management Division. She is also a Senior Research Fellow of the National Center for Business Ethics based at Loyola University – New Orleans. Having completed six years on the editorial board of the top-rated Academy of Management Review, she has served as Associate Editor for Corporate Governance of Business & Society, and is currently on the editorial boards of Business & Society and Business Ethics Quarterly.
Ryan's research focuses primarily on the intersection of ethics and corporate governance, with a special emphasis on the roles, characteristics, and responsibilities of institutional investors. She co-edited the 2015 book, Shareholder Empowerment, and her work has appeared in such journals as Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, Organization Science, Business Ethics Quarterly, Business & Society, Educational & Psychological Measurement, and Corporate Governance: An International Review. In addition to an M.B.A. from the University of Puget Sound, she received her M.A. in Philosophy and Ph.D. in Business Administration – Management from the University of Washington. Ryan’s corporate career included more than a decade with Honeywell, the last several years of which she managed a department of 30 employees.
