James (Jim) R. Beatty, Ph.D.
Professor, Management Information Systems

James (Jim) R. Beatty, Ph.D., is a Professor in Management Information Systems, an Adjunct Professor of Management, and coordinator of quantitative methods at SDSU. He also serves on the faculty for the Executive MBA program. Jim was one of the founding coordinators for SDSU's Institute for Quality and Productivity, taught simultaneously at the Graduate School for International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) from 1991-2002, has been named the Professor of the Year for SDSU (2001), the Alumni's Outstanding Faculty Awardee, the Outstanding Faculty Awardee for the EMBA program four times, was invited and gave the commencement address to the EMBA students, and was previously named as one of the five best professors by the Campus Chronicles poll conducted by the San Diego Union Tribune. He is cited in Who's Who in America.

Professor Beatty has been selected to the National Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award eight times, has served as one of seven national Judges for the President's Quality Award has been a Senior Examiner on the Board of Examiners for the California Awards for Productivity and Excellence (CAPE) several times, has been a Judge for the state program four times, has been a Judge for CalQED twice, and is a Senior Advisor for CAPE. He is the author of the Baldrige Examiner Scoring Software for the State of California. He has led numerous organizations through Baldrige self-assessment.

He is actively involved with the June Burnett Institute for Family and Children, currently serving on the Board and formerly directing the assessment and evaluation component of a Federal Grant for the PARENT Center. He has also been active with the Department of Family and Child Development.

His previous work experience includes practice as a Clinical Psychologist, Director of a mental health clinic, Executive Director of a community action program and head start program, counselor for the Department of Corrections, and Director of Organizational Management Systems for the Navy Personnel Research and Development Center (GM-15), where he supervised four divisions, including Industrial Management, Policy Evaluation and Survey Research, Organizational Systems Simulation Research Laboratory, and Productivity and Quality Management.

As a consultant, he has worked both nationally and internationally for small and large, profit and nonprofit organizations in statistics, statistical process control, computer software development, human resources management, compensation administration, team building, strategic planning, assessment, decision making, performance management, and Baldrige assessment; and he has served as a consultant in court cases, including discrimination, fair pay, and statistical process control cases. He has developed pay for performance programs, performance assessment systems, and pay models for various organizations.

Jim has over 100 publications, textbooks, and papers. He is a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) with the American Compensation Association (WorldatWork) and a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) with the American Society for Personnel Administration. Ph.D. with double major in statistics and psychology; MS in psychology; BA in English.
